In either case, they are making desk rejection decisions efficiently — reading the abstract, the introduction, and in some cases the conclusion, then deciding whether the manuscript makes a credible claim to the journal's scope and readership.
This reading pattern means that the first three elements of your submission — the cover letter, the abstract, and the opening of your introduction — carry a disproportionate share of the decision weight. The methods, the results, the discussion: these receive editorial attention only if the opening material clears the initial filter. A manuscript with a rigorous methodology and compelling findings can be desk-rejected because the abstract failed to communicate what makes the findings worth reading.
Understanding this is not an argument for misleading packaging. It is an argument for accurate packaging — for ensuring that the elements of your manuscript that editors encounter first are as precise and complete as the elements that external reviewers would eventually assess. Many manuscripts are desk-rejected not because the underlying science is weak, but because the writing that introduces it fails to communicate its significance to a reader who has not yet read the whole paper.
Scope Mismatch: The Most Common Desk Rejection Reason

The journal published a clear scope statement, and the submitted manuscript — despite being scientifically sound and well-executed — does not fit that scope in a way that can be argued to the journal's readership.
The gap between what authors think scope means and what editors mean by it is frequently wider than authors expect. A journal that covers cell biology does not cover all cell biology equally — it has a particular emphasis, a particular type of finding it considers significant, a particular relationship between mechanistic discovery and clinical or translational relevance. These emphases are legible in the papers the journal has recently published and in the editor commentary that accompanies major papers, but they are rarely explicit in the scope statement that authors read before submitting.
Reading recent issues of a target journal is the minimum preparation for a submission. Reading the editor commentaries, the review articles, and the letters to the editor gives a more accurate picture of what the journal considers the most important open questions in the field — which is ultimately the standard by which editors evaluate whether a submission is within scope. A manuscript that addresses a question the journal's recent editorial choices suggest is important has a scope argument to make. Abstracts That Fail to Make the Case

An abstract that reports that "we investigated X using Y method and found Z" has told the editor what happened. It has not told the editor why the finding of Z is significant, what prior understanding it overturns or extends, or what its implications are for the field. An editor reading twelve submissions in a morning who encounters an abstract that does not answer these questions will move to the next submission.
The structured abstract format that most journals now require — Background, Methods, Results, Conclusions — is intended to force these elements into the text. In practice, the Conclusions section is where the case-making happens, and it is where abstracts most often fail. A conclusions sentence that restates the finding ("We found that Z is associated with Y") without drawing the implication ("This association suggests that current models of X require revision, and identifies Z as a potential therapeutic target") does not close the argument the abstract needs to make.
The Novelty Claim in the Abstract
High-selectivity journals require that submitted manuscripts advance the field, not simply add another data point to an established literature. The abstract must make this advance legible. Editors who cannot identify, from reading the abstract alone, what specifically this manuscript contributes that the existing literature does not already contain will desk-reject on scope grounds even when the contribution is real.
The novelty claim in an abstract does not need to be grandiose. It needs to be specific and honest. "This is the first study to X in population Y using method Z" is a novelty claim that an editor can evaluate. "This study advances our understanding of X" is not a claim — it is an aspiration. The difference between the two shapes whether the editor reads further or moves on.
Introduction Problems That Trigger Desk Rejection
If the abstract clears the initial filter, the introduction determines whether the manuscript advances past the desk. The introduction does three jobs that are essential to surviving editorial review: it establishes the state of the field, it identifies the gap the study addresses, and it states specifically what the paper reports and why that matters. An introduction that does any of these poorly, or that conflates them, creates the same legibility problem the abstract created — an editor who cannot identify the gap and the contribution from reading the introduction has no basis for advocating internally to send the manuscript to review.
The most common introduction failure is what reviewers and editors sometimes call the "dump and gap" problem: a literature review that summarizes the field comprehensively and then declares that a gap exists, without demonstrating the gap through the summary. An introduction that spends three paragraphs describing what is known about X and then states "however, less is known about Y" has told the editor about the existence of a gap without establishing that the gap matters or that the study was designed to address it. An introduction that describes the literature in a way that makes the gap visible — that shows why the accumulated knowledge points specifically to the unanswered question the study addresses — is doing the work the editor needs it to do.
The introduction also needs to state the contribution clearly. "We aimed to investigate X" is not a statement of contribution — it is a statement of intention. "Here we show that X, which establishes Y and has implications for Z" is a contribution statement. Editors at high-selectivity journals are looking specifically for this framing in the introduction because it tells them whether the paper is making a claim they can send to reviewers for evaluation. An aim can be reasonable without producing a finding worth publishing. A demonstrated result is what the journal publishes.
The one-sentence test: Write a single sentence that states what your paper shows and why it matters to your field. If you cannot write that sentence cleanly in under 30 words, your introduction does not yet have a clear enough contribution statement. The sentence itself does not need to appear in the paper — it is a diagnostic tool for whether the argument is there.
Technical Submission Errors That Produce Immediate Rejection
A subset of desk rejections happens before the editor reads a word of the manuscript, because the submission fails to meet the journal's technical requirements. These rejections are completely avoidable and entirely common.
Word count limits are stated in author guidelines and mechanically enforceable. A manuscript that exceeds the stated word limit for the submission type will be returned without review at most journals. Figure count limits work the same way — a Brief Communication limited to four figures that submits six is a submission that fails before the editor opens the document.
Formatting requirements for references, figure files, supplementary materials, and cover letters vary by journal and sometimes by submission type within a journal. The journals that specify these requirements enforce them because poorly formatted submissions create work for editors, reviewers, and production staff. A manuscript submitted in the correct format signals that the authors have read the instructions — a low bar, but one that a meaningful fraction of submissions fail to meet.
Cover letters are the element most frequently dismissed as a formality and most frequently used as a filter. An effective cover letter states the specific contribution in two to three sentences, explains why the contribution is significant for this journal's readership, and confirms that the manuscript meets the journal's scope. It is not a summary of the abstract. It is the author's direct argument to the editor for why the manuscript should be sent to review — and it is read first, before the abstract, before the introduction, by every handling editor who receives the submission.
The Mismatch Between Significance and Evidence
A pattern that produces desk rejection at journals across disciplines is the mismatch between the significance the authors claim for their work and the evidence the paper provides. An abstract that claims the findings "establish" a causal relationship when the design is observational, or "demonstrate" a mechanism when the evidence is correlational, is making claims the paper cannot support. Editors trained in the field identify this mismatch quickly and treat it as a credibility problem.
The fix is epistemic precision, not self-deprecation. "Our findings are consistent with the hypothesis that X causes Y" is not weaker than "our findings demonstrate that X causes Y" — it is more accurate, and in the hands of an experienced editor it is more credible. A paper that accurately characterizes the strength of its evidence is a paper the editor can evaluate on its merits. A paper that overclaims creates a different question: what else in this manuscript has been overstated?
This precision extends to language throughout the abstract and introduction. "Significantly" should appear only when reporting statistical significance. "Clearly" and "obviously" before contested claims are flags rather than emphasis. "Novel" requires a specific reference class — novel compared to what, for whom, established when? These choices are not stylistic preferences. They are signals about the authors' relationship to their own evidence, and they are read as such by editors who have seen the same patterns across hundreds of submissions.
Resubmitting After Desk Rejection
A desk rejection is information. The editor's decision note rarely explains in detail why the manuscript was not sent to review, but the reason is almost always one of a small number of categories: scope, significance as communicated in the abstract and introduction, or a specific technical deficiency. Identifying which category applies to your rejection determines what revision is needed before the next submission.
A scope rejection does not require revising the science — it requires finding a journal whose scope matches what you actually did. A significance-communication rejection requires revising the abstract, the introduction, and potentially the cover letter to make legible what the manuscript already contains. A technical rejection requires fixing specific formatting or compliance issues and resubmitting, often to the same journal.
Submitting a desk-rejected manuscript to the next journal without any revision is the most common mistake researchers make after a rejection. The issues that produced the desk rejection travel with the manuscript. The next editor will encounter the same abstract, the same introduction, and the same cover letter — and may reach the same conclusion. A manuscript that receives two or three desk rejections in sequence is almost certainly communicating its value poorly, regardless of what value it actually contains.
